CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A recruiting sergeant with the U.S. Army was arrested on charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and assault on a female, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.
Detectives arrested Charlie Ingram, 45, on Thursday.
Police said Ingram assaulted a 20-year-old woman on Feb. 3 while she was at the U.S. Army recruiting office inquiring about joining the Army. Police said while the woman was waiting, Ingram made "inappropriate sexual comments" and then escorted her to a supply room, where he sexually assaulted her. She tried to leave the room, police said, but Ingram pushed her into a corner.
The woman was able to escape when someone else came into the building, startling Ingram, according to police.
Eyewitness News went to Ingram's north Charlotte home, where he was out of jail on bond. He answered the front door, but wouldn't answer any questions.
The Army said Ingram is suspended from his recruiting duties and that it takes allegations of recruiter misconduct very seriously.
Police ask that anyone with information about the case or other incidents involving Ingram contact Detective Banner with the Sexual Assault Unit at 704-336-8279.
