Charlotte woman describes scene of 95-car crash near NC-Va. line

At least 75 vehicles were involved in a major wreck near the North Carolina border in Virginia on Sunday, according to the Virginia State Police.

VIRGINIA — Both directions of Interstate 77 reopened overnight after a major crash at the North Carolina and Virginia state line.

Troopers said at least 95 cars were involved in the Sunday afternoon crash. Three people were killed and dozens of others went to the hospital.

Virginia state police said the crash happened because of the fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire near Fancy Gap mountain.

One family from Charlotte said they were caught in the aftermath of the crash. They said two semi-trucks in front of them jackknifed and seconds later, they watched as cars crashed and mounted, with some even sliding under the trucks.

“By that time, all we could hear was just explosions,” Linda Alexander said. “So we jumped out of our truck and we grabbed our granddaughters and we just ran, all the way up to the top of that ramp, and people just started running and all we could see was just flames.”

Alexander said she believes God put her family at the right place so they could get off on the ramp and avoid the carnage.

"All you could hear was people screaming and the only time we could see something was when there was explosions," she said.

Alexander said they were on their way back to Charlotte from a weekend with relatives in Virginia.
