SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Carolina Panthers are preparing to take the field for the 2022 season. The team reported to the practice field for the first time Wednesday during this season’s training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg.

Wednesday’s practice was also the first time fans got a look at new quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was traded to the Panthers from the Cleveland Browns during the offseason.

Wearing long sleeves and long pants in 90-degree weather, Mayfield made a fashion statement as he took the field. He told reporters he was just being stubborn and joked about wearing a swimsuit to the next practice.

Mayfield will be competing with Sam Darnold for the starting quarterback position. The first team reps were spilt between both quarterbacks at today’s practice. Darnold spent most of his day with the first time, while Mayfield was with the second. That is expected to switch tomorrow.

Head coach Matt Rhule told reporters he would prefer to let each quarterback play with the same group of receivers all practice to build timing. The battle for the top spot is the main headline going into the preseason. Rhule also said cornerback Jaycee Horn was put on the injury list with soreness in a previously injured foot. It does not appear to be a long-term issue.

McCaffrey keeps it comfortable

Like every year, the Panthers have a unique experience while at training camp. Being one of few teams that still travel for training camp, there is more time for the players to bond.

They also do their best to stay comfortable while living in the dorms, some more than others.

Running back Christian McCaffrey is trying to make his room the most comfortable it can be.

“I got a lot of stuff in my room. I’ll be honest with you. [it’s] definitely a bougie room,” McCaffery said. “I’d say probably the bougiest room on the team but I like to come back to the room and make it comfortable so it looks like half of a treatment room and half of a four seasons room.”

The team is back on the field tomorrow for day two of practice, starting at 10:30 a.m.
