BELMONT,N.C. — The police chief in the town of Belmont has resigned after slightly more than a year on the job.
H.C. "Skip" Clark took the job in February 2016 and resigned on Monday. Belmont Mayor Charlie Martin said Clark's family never moved to the area from Georgia and thinks that may have led to his decision to leave.
Because he lacked certification, Clark was an administrative chief which meant he could lead the department but couldn't wear a badge, carry a department-issued gun or make arrests.
Clark's successor will be Belmont's third police chief in as many years.
Assistant Police Chief Chad Hawkins will serve as interim chief. Hawkins came to the department in February after leading the Cherryville Police Department for four years.
