3 women charged after heroin found in North Carolina jail

BURGAW, N.C. — Authorities in North Carolina have charged three women after two of them overdosed on heroin brought into a jail last weekend.

WWAY in Wilmington reports the Pender County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Elizabeth Hardee Howland, who had reported to the jail to serve a sentence last weekend, had heroin with her when she arrived at the jail on Friday.

The news release said Marissa Grace Reynolds and Allison Nicole Hall were taken to the hospital after they both ingested heroin they took from Howland, who had fallen asleep.

Howland, Reynolds and Hall were each charged with possession of heroin and possession of a controlled substance in a prison or jail facility.

The news release did not say how Howland allegedly managed to get heroin into the facility.
