New NC Law Prohibits License Frames That Block Info

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Drivers in North Carolina with license plate frames could face $100 fines if the plate's expiration date, numbers or state name is blocked.

A new law went into effect Wednesday requiring the information to be visible. Violators face a $100 fine, which is raised to $240 once court costs are factored in.

Many drivers in the Charlotte area had parts of their licenses covered by frames and said they weren't aware of the new law.

"I didn't know nothing about it until you just told me, to be totally honest," Chekiera Leeth said.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said license frames create a safety issue when they obscure license plate information. Victims of hit-and-run accidents sometimes can't see the state the car is from because the frame is blocking it, troopers said. That makes reporting the crash to police more difficult and also creates problems for officers trying to find the offending driver.
