Mother Charged In Girl's Death Begs For Help In 911 Call

GASTON COUNTY, N.C.,None — Officials have released the 911 call made by a Gaston County mother who faces charges in her 2-year-old daughter's death.

Shanna Lanham called 911 last week from the hotel room where she had been staying and said her daughter, Addison, was unresponsive.

"Your baby is not responding?" the dispatcher said.

"She's not," Lanham said. "I mean, she's breathing but she's not responding."

Investigators said the toddler had a broken leg that went untreated for weeks. She then became infected with MRSA, which spread to her bloodstream and killed her, police said.

"I keep trying to call her name," Lanham said in the 911 call.

"How old is she?" the dispatcher asked.

"Two," Lanham responded. "Please hurry."

Lanham did not mention a broken leg in the 911 call. She did say that her daughter's head was swollen and that she didn't know what was going on.

The 911 operator asked Lanham to stay calm, but she could barely keep it together.

"Oh my God, this is my baby. This is my world -- what am I going to do?" she said. "Please hurry. Please hurry."

Lanham and her boyfriend, Jason Wells, were charged with felony child abuse in the girl's death. The toddler was with Wells, who is a convicted sex offender, in the hours before she died.

Wells also faces charges of baby-sitting as a sex offender and failing to register the correct address.
