Man Sentenced To 21 Years In Teacher's Murder

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A man who robbed and killed a Charlotte middle school teacher will spend at least 21 years in prison.

Ashanti Bess, 23, pleaded guilty to robbery and second-degree murder in a Thursday morning hearing.

Family members found 38-year-old Anthony Davis, a teacher at Randolph Middle School, dead in his Lady Liberty Lane home in February 2010. A few days later, police arrested Bess, one of Davis' former students.

The detective who worked the case said Davis' family was on board with the plea deal.

"We spoke to the family ... and they accept it," said Detective Gary McFadden with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. "They did not want to go through a full trial with this."

Bess did not say anything during the hearing.
