12-year-old boy says student placed plastic bag over his head until he passed out

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A middle school boy in Rock Hill says a classmate put a plastic bag over his head, and that he passed out because of it.

Assante Pettus is 12 years old. He said gym class had just let out. He said he was walking down York Preparatory Academy's Hill when it happened.

"Like, she pulled it over my head and, you know, the handles, she pulled the handles, so it's like it's over my face and she's pulling the handles," Pettus said. "When she put the bag over my head, I couldn't breathe, so I tried to pull it off, but I couldn't pull it off because she was pulling it. And then I passed out."

He was OK, but he and his mother were still worried about what could have happened.

When asked whether his mother was upset, Pettus said, "Yeah, big time."

Pettus said the girl who attacked him is also 12 years old and attends the same school. Part of him thinks she was just joking and went too far. Part of him isn't sure.

"I thought she was going to put it on, pull it back off like, 'Ha ha, it was funny,’” said Pettus. "But she didn't pull it right back off, so then I got scared because I thought she was serious."

School officials agree that she wasn't serious. In fact, they didn't even suspend her.

They said the two were just “screwing around, doing stuff that was stupid.”

Rock Hill police seem to be taking this much more seriously. The police report calls this an investigation of assault and battery with intent to kill.

It also lists the girl as a suspect.
