CLOVER, S.C. — A York County man is facing charges after authorities say he dug up and stole a tree planted by Girl Scouts not once – but twice.

Back in May, a local Girl Scout troop planted a red Japanese maple tree in front of the Clover Public Library as part of a community project, reports state. The tree was reported missing on May 12, just two days after it was planted.

The troop replanted the tree, only to have it stolen on June 28.

Clover Police found the missing tree and arrested Clifton Greene Jr. for the theft of both trees. He’s charged with two counts of larceny.

CPD Capt. Logan McGarity said officers went back and re-planted the tree in front of the library after it was found.

“On the large scale of crime, this may seem small, but it’s sad to see something a group of Girl Scouts put time in get stolen not ponce, but twice,” he said.
