The York County Detention Center mistakenly released an inmate, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.
Joshua Earnest Peters, 37, was released by mistake Thursday after an officer misread his sentencing information.
Peters was waiting to be taken to a South Carolina Department of Corrections facility, the sheriff’s office said.
Peters was found just after midnight Saturday morning at a home in Pineville. He is in Mecklenburg County Jail waiting for transport back.
A quality control clerk learned of the mistake on Friday.
“This incident appears to be human error,” Sheriff Kevin Tolson said. “We are conducting a full investigation into what transpired so we can take corrective actions to ensure this mistake is not repeated. We are thankful this situation was resolved peacefully without further incident.”
Peters was originally booked into the detention center on Feb. 27 and charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, his second offense. Peters was sentenced to 40 months in prison.
