York Co. deputy fired, accused of providing money in exchange for sex

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The York County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday that a deputy was fired from the department for engaging in conduct unbecoming of an officer.

Investigators said Deputy Christopher Gage was terminated Jan. 10 after the Sheriff's Office received allegations Gage engaged in an extramarital affair, provided money in exchange for sexual favors and abstained from serving an outstanding arrest warrant.

Sheriff Kevin Tolson said he received those allegations Jan. 8 and decided to fire Gage based on the seriousness and credibility of the claims.

“I take all allegations of officer misconduct very seriously,” Tolson said in a statement. “As soon as a complaint was received, we immediately interviewed the complainant.  I fired Gage as soon as certain statements made during the interview were corroborated.”

The State Law Enforcement Division was called in to investigate the allegations.

After the agency’s investigation, a warrant for misconduct in office was obtained for Gage.

He was taken into custody by SLED agents July 10.

“Gage’s conduct is reprehensible and will not be tolerated this in this office,” Tolson said. “This former employee’s behavior is not a reflection of the good work of other YCSO deputies.”
