CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released the 911 call in the case of a fake Uber driver accused of assaulting a passenger.

A woman said someone posing as an Uber driver sexually assaulted her in uptown Charlotte last weekend, sources told Channel 9.

The victim told police the "fake Uber driver" sexually assaulted her Saturday after she left a bar in South End.

In the 911 call, you can hear the 25-year-old victim's voice explain to dispatch what happened just a short time after she left East Bland Street.

"I'm like shocked right now. I'm jittery. I'm sorry, it's fine, it's not a problem. A man said he was an Uber driver. Long story short, he stole my phone, and he hit me," the victim said.

Police said the suspect was parked where Uber drivers usually line up when he offered the victim and her friends a ride. The victim's friends were reportedly dropped off first and she remained in the Uber alone.

According to the victim, the suspect drove her to some apartments on Antlers Lane near South Boulevard and sexually assaulted her before she managed to break free and get help.

In the 911 call, the victim also described the suspect's vehicle as a black 4-door Chevy Malibu with dark tint on the windows.

Police said the driver did not have an Uber decal on the car.

LaTroy Wilder works in the area and, given the volume of Uber traffic, he's not surprised that someone pretended to be a driver.

"How easy would it be for someone to pretend to be one of these guys?” Wilder said.. “I would say pretty easy."

Uber said it wants to protect riders from these types of crimes.

Before getting in an Uber, make sure the license plate, driver photo and driver's name match what's listed in the app.

"When you take Uber, you get a picture and what their car looks like, but it's very tiny so you couldn't necessarily identify the person from that," Uber rider Barry Fulp said.

Channel 9 is asking authorities for the woman's condition.

No arrests have been made in the case.
