CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman who was supposed to take care of her roommate's toddler will spend at least 15 years in prison for killing him.

Cassandra Mingo pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Thursday in the death of Coltton Doleman, who was 23 months old.

Mingo had first told police that the little boy had fallen down the stairs, but the medical examiner said his injuries weren't consistent with a fall.

Mingo had been living with the boy's mother and after the hearing, the mother said she felt betrayed.

"The person who I trusted most with my child is the main one who deceived me," said Kayla Doleman as she fought back tears.

Doleman and her sister and mother were at the hearing, and spoke of the little boy afterward.

"Coltton was the sweetest little boy, had the deepest little brown eyes," said Celina Doleman, who was Coltton's aunt.

She and Coltton's mother left with a single question for Mingo.

"I asked the same thing -- why?" Kayla Doleman asked. "He was a beautiful baby boy. He would wake up and tell you he loved you every day. How could you possibly do something like that?"
