CMPD officials said the driver, Matthew Michael Harvie, was driving his 2006 Acura on Runnymede Lane when he ran off the roadway on a curve. The vehicle hit a large tree, split apart and struck three other trees before overturning, authorities said.
Police said the passenger, Mary Stephens Brooks, was pronounced dead at the scene. Harvie was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries.
Officials said alcohol and speed were both factors in the crash. Harvie has been charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving. He is currently in custody at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
