CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A woman has died following a head-on collision in Catawba County on Saturday, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said they responded to a fatal collision on NC 16 near St. Johns Church Road shortly before 6:30 p.m.

An investigation revealed that a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling south on NC 16 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2011 Mitsubishi Galant. Excessive speed seems to have contributed to the collision, according to troopers.

Troopers said the driver of the Cobalt, 35-year-old Elizabeth Rose Bushatz, was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, where she later died.

The driver and a passenger in the Galant were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to troopers.
