CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman said she is afraid that the man who allegedly attacked her will get out of jail and attack her again.

"I'm not safe, I can't sleep," said the Charlotte woman who said she has been living with the fear for the last four years.

That man is her ex-boyfriend, Robert Barringer, 40, who was arrested dozens of times over the last 24 years. That includes four times in the last two weeks in connection with assaulting her.

"They always arrest him but they let him back out," she told Eyewitness News, without wanting to use her name.

But the fear has reached her family after police said Barringer came to her mother's house and fired several shotgun blasts.

"We need to be safe because we all are fearful of him," her mother said.

"My guys are asking me, how is this continuing to happen? What else can we do to try and keep someone like this off the street," asked Capt. Rob Dance.

Barringer pointed a pistol at the woman's 12-year-old son in one of those attacks, Dance said.

Barringer is now in jail with his bond set at $175,000 but his former girlfriend fears he will get out again, and doesn't know how it will end.

"I really don't know when it's going to stop," she said. "When it's going to stop I guess is when he kills me."
