CHARLOTTE — A woman spoke with Channel 9 about Monday morning when two dogs attacked her and her mother.
The dogs got away from their owner and attacked the mother at the Mallard Glen apartments off West Mallard Creek Church Road in University City, police said.
The victim’s daughter, Hanyange Yodi, told Channel 9 that her mother was on a walk when two Cane Corso mix dogs attacked her.
The mother called Yodi and was calm, she said.
“I am dying,” Yodi recalled her mother telling her. “There’s two dogs eating at me. I fought as hard as I can. I can’t fight anymore.”
Yodi said she could hear “the dogs mauling and eating at my mom.”
Yodi said she immediately drove to the scene where she said the dogs attacked her.
“It had to be my demeanor,” Yodi said. “The dogs started charging at me, and so I immediately fell over, because they were big, big dogs. They just started mauling at me, my legs. The doctors did a great job, but my legs are messed up through here. I have bite marks through here. All through my stomach.”
Neighbors intervened, which was what most likely saved the two women’s lives.
“I’m glad that our neighborhood saved our lives,” Yodi said. “Like everybody that came and helped us actually saved our lives.”
Yodi believes her mother nearly died while trying to protect children who were nearby.
“The dogs first came and jumped on the little girl, and she said don’t move, and so the dogs came to her,” Yodi said.
Yodi is recovering from the injuries at home.
Her mom, a woman in her 60s, is still in the hospital. Yodi said her mother couldn’t speak and that doctors have said she won’t be able to walk anytime soon.
“My mom hasn’t talked to us yet,” Yodi said. “She just opened her eyes when I went to go see her and that was good enough for me.”
Animal control euthanized the dogs.
No charges have been filed.
