Woman killed when driver fleeing hit-and-run crashes into car, police say

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a man is facing charges in a crash that left Chantelle Patterson, 44, dead in north Charlotte early Saturday.

Officers responded around 2:20 a.m. to the intersection of North Tryon Street, West 30th Street and Matheson Avenue.

Detectives said the driver of a Ford Taurus, Laregis McCoy, had just been involved in a hit-and-run collision and was fleeing that initial scene when he struck a Lexus ES 330. Police said he was speeding and failed to stop at the red light, hitting the Lexus on the passenger side.

The Lexus had the right-of-way at the intersection when the wreck happened.

Patterson was the passenger in the Lexus and was taken to the hospital but later died.

“I feel so down and depressed,” Patterson’s son, Malik Patterson-Bowens, said. “I just, it feels unreal right now.”

“Nobody wants to see their momma go out like that,” Patterson’s daughter, Bre’anna Torrence, said.

Patterson did volunteer work through a foundation -- Gabe’s Heart Foundation.

“She fed the homeless with that foundation,” Torrence said. “She did Toys for Tots. It just was her. It just was her vibe. That’s just what she wanted to do.”

McCoy and the driver of the Lexus, Patterson’s fiancé Ivan Tapley, Sr., were taken to a hospital, with serious injuries.

“He’s (Tapley) definitely taking it hard,” Torrence said. “Because they were together. They did everything together.”

Once McCoy is released from the hospital, he is facing charges for felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury, driving while impaired and aggressive driving. Investigators believe impairment and speed contributed to the crash.
