CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman moved out of her uptown Charlotte apartment after a man was shot and killed, but she is still having to pay rent because she could not get out of her lease.
The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. on Nov. 9 at the Skyhouse Apartments on North Church Street.
Police locked down the North Tower, later said the victim was not a resident of SkyHouse and that they believe the murder was drug related.
Paula Jacobson said she never slept at the Skyhouse again. She moved out, breaking her lease and now, she said Skyhouse wants her to pay up.
“So, they want $2,700, which is actually due tomorrow and two months rent,” Jacobson said.

SkyHouse released the following statement to Channel 9:
“This unfortunate incident is still under investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. As an active investigation, CMPD was only able to release limited information about the matter, which we shared with residents in a resident advisory letter and other communications following the incident. To our knowledge, the incident did not involve short-term rentals and the corporate housing providers that lease units at the community perform background screening on all prospective residents. We have reviewed our security protocols and require residents and guests to use access fobs at three separate secure access points before they are able to access resident floors.”
