BOONE, N.C. — A 21-year-old woman, who was charged with DWI after hitting and killing two people as they walked across the road on Sept. 4 in Boone, is now facing additional charges, police said.

The collision happened at about 11 p.m. at the intersection of East King Street and Forest Hills Drive.

Officers said Tracy Lindamore, 52, and James Lindamore Jr., 54, were crossing the road in a designated crosswalk when Madison Mahagan struck them.

Both victims, who were from Maryland, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

Mahagan, who police said is a student at Appalachian State University, was arrested and initially charged with Driving While Impaired. According to court documents, her blood alcohol level was 0.14 when she was tested 90 minutes after the crash.

Police said Tuesday that Mahagan has also been charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle and was placed under a $100,000 secured bond. She was released after posting bail.

Reporter Dave Faherty spoke with people who live nearby who believe cameras should be put up at major intersections like the one where the crash happened as a deterrent going forward.

“I’m horrified. I’m horrified for everyone involved,” one resident said. “Lives have been cut short, lives have been ruined. Not just for the individuals that were impacted immediately, but for the rest of their families and the community.”

No other details have been released at this point and the investigation is ongoing.
