Woman arrested, accused of selling drug with fentanyl, leading to deadly OD

MATTHEWS, N.C. — A woman is in jail with a $1 million bond after allegedly selling a drug that led a man to fatally overdose, the Matthews Police Department said.

Investigators said they were called on Aug. 11 by the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives were calling about Daniel Hogan, 29, from Weddington, who died after a drug overdose on Aug. 4.

Union County detectives had discovered that Hogan bought the drugs that led to his death in Matthews, they said.

After an investigation, police said they found evidence indicating the fentanyl that caused Hogan’s death was sold to him on Aug. 3 in Matthews by Casey Nicole Garner, 30, of Monroe.

A bill of indictment was issued on July 31. Garner was charged with second-degree murder (unlawful distribution of a substance), death by distribution of certain controlled substances, sale of Schedule II Controlled Substance.

Garner is in the Union County jail on a $1 million bond.
