As the Powerball jackpot grows, so does anticipation in the Carolinas

RALEIGH — Someone in Stanly County kicked off the New Year with a $1 million Powerball win, officials with the N.C. Education Lottery announced on Thursday.

The winner bought the $2 ticket at the Friendly Mart on N.C. 24/27 West Bypass in Albemarle.

The ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls in the New Year’s Day drawing to win $1 million. The odds of matching numbers on all five white balls are 1 in 11.6 million.

Two Powerball tickets won a $1 million prize, the largest prize in the Jan. 1 drawing. A player purchased the other $1 million winning ticket in Arizona.

The winner has 180 days to claim the prize.

Saturday’s Powerball drawing offers a $200 million jackpot or $90.7 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
