Who are the highest-paid state employees in North Carolina?

NORTH CAROLINA — The Charlotte Business Journal has compiled the annual salaries for more than 82,000 North Carolina state government employees, over 150 of whom make more than $200,000.

From psychiatrists to investment managers to transportation engineers, the state’s average salary was $53,708 in August. That average takes into account salary information for almost 69,000 employees whose annual salary is more than $25,000.

Of those, 160 made $200,000 or more, and the state’s highest-paid employee, Valerie Hillings, director of the N.C. Museum of Art, made over $316,000.

Over 80% of the state’s highest-paid employees who made more than $200,000 work in the medical and mental health fields.

Valerie Hillings, director of the State Museum of Art, part of the Natural and Cultural Resources agency, is the top-paid state government employee with a salary of $316,978.
