CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The newest set of U.S. Census Bureau population estimates shows Charlotte now ranks as the 15th-largest city in the nation. But have other cities and towns in the Charlotte suburbs grown at a faster pace? The short answer: yes.
Since the 2010 Census, Fort Mill’s population has nearly doubled in size to reach 22,284 residents as of July 1, 2019, according to the latest census data. That represents growth of more than 93% for the South Carolina town about 18 miles south of Charlotte.
Also experiencing rapid growth between 2010 and 2019 has been the small town of Waxhaw in Union County, about 29 miles southeast of Charlotte. Its population shot up almost 73% to just shy of 17,150 people in July 2019.
Still, Charlotte has posted double-digit population growth of its own since 2010. The Queen City’s population rose 20.4% as of July 2019. And its increase of 150,101 residents during that same time frame is unsurprisingly the highest numeric gain of all local cities and towns in the Charlotte metro.
The estimated population in 2019 for the local metro area as a whole is pegged at 2.64 million, up 17.5% — or by 392,920 people — since 2010.
