Which jobs earn Charlotteans the highest salaries?

CHARLOTTE — Charlotteans employed in the health-care field can expect to earn some of the highest-paying salaries in the Queen City, as occupations such as general internists, family medicine physicians and obstetricians/gynecologists are among those that net more than $200,000 in average annual pay.

General internal medicine physicians in the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area take home an estimated $314,080 in annual compensation, the highest of any local profession included in the latest data release by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program, formerly known as the Occupational Employment Statistics program. The newest set of estimates, which came out at the end of March, are current as of May 2020 — the most recent data available.

All but one of the 10 top-paying jobs in the Charlotte area are found in the health-care sector — and those positions pay estimated average annual salaries of $200,000-plus. Chief executives are the exception, earning the second-highest yearly pay here of $257,520.

Two medical jobs that are also tops in pay in the Charlotte region but that don’t have specific salary estimates listed are anesthesiologists and surgeons, excluding ophthalmologists. The only available salary information given for both occupations through the OEWS program is that they pay at least $208,000 a year and $100 per hour.

The average annual salary for all occupations in the Charlotte metro is pegged at $55,350 — up from $52,150 when the estimates were released in 2020. That comes in below the national average of $56,310 in annual compensation. However, it’s higher than the $51,010 average annual salary in North Carolina and $46,230 in South Carolina.
