CHARLOTTE, N.C. — At first glance, it may not appear much has changed in the ongoing battle to claim shoppers’ grocery dollars in the Charlotte area. The main players seizing the largest market share in metro Charlotte continue to reign supreme -- but those shares are shrinking.
Take Harris Teeter, for instance. The Matthews-based grocer, owned by The Kroger Co., holds the area’s highest market share at 18.7 percent, a percentage that has dropped from 19.8 percent in 2018 and 20.1 percent in 2017.

Walmart and Food Lion, too, have seen their local market share drop, albeit slightly, from last year.
That trend was among those captured in Chain Store Guide’s 2019 Grocery Industry Market Share Report. Each year, the market research firm releases data on sales performance of grocery retailers and their competitors for hundreds of metro areas, Charlotte included.

Its local report encompasses seven counties in North Carolina: Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Union -- and three counties in South Carolina: Chester, Lancaster and York.
