CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte mother said she was getting ready to cook a snack for her kids when her Frigidaire Gallery oven gave her an unwelcome surprise.
Tawanna Hinton told Channel 9′s Jason Stoogenke the oven glass burst.
“I probably was sitting down for maybe about three or four minutes, because the beeper hadn’t went off yet and, all of a sudden, I heard a ‘pow’ and glass just shattered everywhere,” she said.

Fortunately, Hinton said, no one was nearby at the time.
“I just thought ‘what in the world happened?’” she said. “It just really scared me to death.”
The Frigidaire owner’s manual tells consumers not to “hit the glass with pots, pans, or any other object,” or “close the oven door until all of the … racks are … in place,” and that “scratching, hitting, jarring, or stressing the glass may weaken its structure, causing an increased risk of breakage.”
Hinton doesn’t think any of these caused her issue.

She said she contacted Frigidaire’s parent company, Electrolux, and that the company replaced the glass for free.
Action 9 checked records with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and found several similar complaints in just the past year.
The commission told Stoogenke it “takes all incidents involving shattering glass seriously” and urges people to report them.

A records check found no recalls of Frigidaire Gallery ovens related to this issue in the past 10 years.
However, on ClassAction.org, Stoogenke found lawyers considering a lawsuit over “oven doors shattering” against multiple brands, including Frigidaire and Electrolux.
“Although infrequent, oven glass may break,” Electrolux said.
The company said the glass is designed to break into “fragments with rounded edges” instead of shards and said to make sure you follow all advice in the owner’s manual.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission gave Action 9 similar advice to pass along to you -- no matter what brand you own.
