CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a city known as “Banktown,” one might expect the highest-paying jobs to be found in banking and finance.
But according to a recent analysis by The Business Journals of more than 600 publicly traded companies nationwide, many of the highest median salaries among Charlotte-based firms can be found in more industrial sectors.

Energy companies figure prominently among the top ranks nationally — Lilis Energy Inc. of San Antonio outranks all companies with a median employee wage of $500,000. And as noted earlier this year in a CBJ comparison of Charlotte-based companies’ CEO pay versus median salaries, Duke Energy Corp. ranks No. 1 locally by the latter figure. The median worker there earns $122,365.
In Charlotte, manufacturing operations — from steel giant Nucor Corp., ranking No. 2 among locally based companies, to Sealed Air Corp., the maker of Bubble Wrap and other packaging materials — make up the bulk of the top-paying firms.
As for the banks? The only one still headquartered in Charlotte, Bank of America Corp., comes in at No. 3 locally.
