West Columbia police officer shot in head

A West Columbia police officer was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon.

The officer was serving a bench warrant at the time of the shooting, officials said.

The officer was rushed to the hospital, but his condition has not been released.

“When they were there talking to him, trying to get him to surrender, he put his head inside the window and then fired a shot through the wall, which struck the officer in the head,” said West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall.

The suspect is in custody.
