CHARLOTTE — West Charlotte High School will forfeit all its 2021 through 2022 football games after the team used an ineligible player, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed.
CMS said one of the school’s student athletes was ineligible for the season based on “residence requirements.” The school voluntarily reported the violation to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, CMS said.
After investigating, the NCHSAA commissioner ruled the team was in violation because of the player’s residence.
The NCHSAA said the West Charlotte Lions have to forfeit all their 2021-2022 football games, return any money earned from playoff games, and pay a $250 fine.
An NCHSAA official told Channel 9 it does not “release details of any situation that is an alleged violation of our rule.” The official said sharing names or details could harm the young people involved.
The news comes less than a month after Myers Park High School also had to forfeit its 2021 season due to fraudulent documents used for school enrollment and athlete eligibility, the school’s principal stated in a letter to parents.
Sources told Channel 9 the investigation started when some Myers Park players were called into a parent meeting and school leaders found out their parents didn’t actually live in the school zone.
NCHSAA said the Myers Park investigation “had no bearing on this situation.”
