CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A west Charlotte church at the center of a deadly COVID-19 outbreak had another large event on Saturday.

A Channel 9 crew saw several cars in the parking lot of the United House of Prayer and dozens of people filing into the church before the event.

The Mecklenburg County Health Department told the church that this was a bad time to have a large event.

But the United House of Prayer told the health department that it would follow all necessary precautions and limit the number of people inside the church.

Mecklenburg County Public Health released the following statement:

“MCPH is aware of the events and have been in conversation with UHOP leadership. We explained that now is not the time for this type of event considering the extent of the pandemic in our community. We have been assured by church leadership that they are implementing all of the necessary precautions and limiting the numbers in the church at any given time.”

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

Back in October, 11 people died and more than 200 people got sick after a weeklong convocation at the United House of Prayer.

The positive cases connected to the events resulted in the county’s largest COVID-19 outbreak.

Health officials ordered the church to close all of its locations in Mecklenburg County. They later reached an agreement to safely reopen at the end of October.
