Wells Fargo customers report debit card problems

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Eyewitness News caught up with Alaaeldin Elghaziri as he was rushing to work Wednesday. He said his day started with aggravation.

"A couple of hours ago, I was trying to charge at Harris Teeter, it didn't work," said Elghaziri, of Charlotte.

He said he couldn't figure out why his Wells Fargo debit card was denied.

"I knew I had enough money in my bank account," he said.

A Wells Fargo spokesperson said there was a technical glitch with Visa that impacted customers nationwide.

Eyewitness News called Visa, which released a statement stating, "Earlier this morning, a Visa error caused some Wells Fargo Visa debit cardholders to be unable to use their cards. The situation has been resolved. Visa apologizes for any inconvenience to Wells Fargo and its customers."

"(It's) frustrating, especially knowing you have money on your card and not being able to use it," said Dafanie Alleyne of Charlotte.

Alleyne said her card has been fine, but her mom called her upset Wednesday morning.

"She wasn't able to use it and she was at the doctor's office," said Alleyne.

Viewers have called, emailed and posted their problems on Eyewitness News' Facebook page. Two viewers told Eyewitness News they checked their account statement after their cards were denied and saw charges pending anyway.

Wells Fargo says that will be fixed. Anyone who is charged extra will get their money back.

Wells Fargo said customers should monitor their accounts to make sure there aren't extra charges. If you see something that is not right, give the company a call.

It doesn't appear everyone was impacted. Eyewitness News found several people who used their cards Wednesday morning and had no problems.
