CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Wells Fargo Championship is moving closer to an extension at Quail Hollow Club, an executive with the tournament’s title sponsor told CBJ on Wednesday. Talks started last year between the PGA Tour, Quail Hollow and Wells Fargo.
Kendall Alley, Wells Fargo regional president, said the main issue yet to be resolved is where the PGA Tour event would be relocated in 2021, the year Quail Hollow will host the Presidents Cup, a biennial team competition pitting an American team of top golfers against an international roster. Assuming a five-year extension — following recent trends — the tournament would stay in Charlotte through 2024.

A similar scheduling conflict occurred in 2017, when the PGA Championship came to Quail Hollow. That year, the Wells Fargo Championship moved to Wilmington to allow for course preparation for the PGA Championship. Organizers have said it was a good experience — but an expensive one.
In 2021, a mid-Atlantic or Southeast city and course will be the setting for the Charlotte tournament’s one-year hiatus, but a site has yet to be determined.
