Waxhaw police officer hit by car while directing traffic

WAXHAW, N.C. — A Waxhaw police officer is recovering after he was hit by a car while directing traffic Wednesday morning.

According to a release from the town, it happened around 6:40 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 75 and Rehobeth Road.

Officials said the officer stopped traffic on Waxhaw-Marvin Road and Highway 75 to allow drivers from Rehobeth Road through, but a driver ignored his stop instruction and drove into the intersection, striking him at a low speed.

The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Town officials say he is expected to be OK.

The driver who hit him was charged with failing to comply with direction from a law enforcement officer.

Waxhaw Mayor Robert Murray said the officer is an SRO and does a lot in the community working with businesses.

“I was struck at first knowing he was the one involved, but very pleased it was only a minor injury. I’m hoping he’ll be up and running quickly,” the mayor said.

Officers started directing traffic at the intersection earlier this month. It’s part of a deal with a developer that’s building dozens of homes off Rehobeth Road.

Town officials said there have been 51 crashes at the intersection from January 2021 to December 2025.

A new traffic signal is planned to make the area safer but due to equipment delays, that hasn’t happened yet.

“Anytime a developer goes near these types of intersections, we’re kind of holding their feet to the fire and trying to get them to help out with traffic mitigation expenses, such as adding a new light,” Murray said. “This is just an example of us working with our developers and trying to get them to help benefit the town as they look to build and expand more homes in the area.”

Waxhaw is working on its downtown master plan, which would add a parking garage and make it more walkable.

Some residents are against the garage, saying they were worried about traffic.
