DALLAS, N.C. — Roads are flooding all over Gaston County. The town of Cramerton has shut down a major street for blocks anticipating even more flooding.
"Right now we don't have any houses that are in immediate danger, but if it continues to rain and it crests higher than what is forecast, we can have folks that are displaced," Mayor Ronnie Worley said.
The South Fork River expanded into the town of Cramerton at an alarming rate.
"I've never seen anything like this here," Elaine Ferguson said. "I've seen it flood some, but never anything like this."
Town authorities closed Riverside Drive from Seventh Street to First Street, but the fire station is located on that stretch. Channel 9 crews captured firefighters, residents, and even the mayor shoveling sand into bags, placing them around the station, hoping to keep the water out.
"We're doing the best we can to maintain the emergency services of the fire department," Worley said.
The National Weather Service has predicted the South Fork River will crest between 12:00 and 4:00 a.m. But some people are worried it will be even later. Residents are watching the rising water closely as emergency crews prepare for the worst.
