Water leak leaves family’s townhome unsafe

GASTONIA, N.C. — A mother said her family’s quality of life has been compromised because water has been leaking from the second floor of her Gastonia townhouse onto the floor below.

Andrea Washington moved into Crowders View Townhomes a month ago and after a week of moving in, her first-floor ceiling started leaking.

“We actually really noticed after we got out of the tub,” Washington said Wednesday. “It sounded like we were taking a shower downstairs instead of upstairs.”

The ceiling started sagging from the water damage.

Washington said her family can only use the second floor and must limit how often they shower.

“In between the leaks, the kids really can’t take a bath,” Washington said.

Washington said she contacted maintenance and was told to “patch it up” and wait until the floor dries.

However, their home is unsafe, and it smells due to the leak.

Washington said she doesn’t want a quick fix because she fears it could put her kids in harm’s way.

“I think I stay more scared than anybody, but it’s because my babies are here,” she said.

Washington said they were excited to move in but that joy was squashed in less than two weeks.

“All I wanted to do was come in and decorate and just be at home,” she said.

She hopes that will happen one day.

“I just want a home for my kids,” Washington said. “I want to be happy with it.”

Channel 9′s Almiya White emailed the complex and the company that manages the property.

Shortly after White’s interview with Washington, the leasing manager contacted her, went to her unit, and took pictures of the damage.

The leasing manager told Washington they will make repairs as soon as possible.
