IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Channel 9 crews were driving by when a camper being towed behind a pickup truck flipped over along Interstate 77 in Iredell County on Friday. The truck and the camper ended up crashing into the center barrier wall.
The crash was caught on camera as it happened in the northbound lanes near exit 33.
After the wreck, traffic was moving slowly for miles.
There is a drop off in the pavement there, which has gotten drivers worried.
“I know what he hit to make him do that,” driver Terry Lowthorp said. “The road's not finished there.”
It’s unclear if that deviation in the road had anything to do with the camper overturning.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been repaving the normal driving lanes in the toll-lane area.
Lowthorp drives on I-77 a lot but not with his trailer for a reason.
“I avoid it like the plague,” Lowthorp said. “I don’t want the truck rolling over. I don’t want to kill nobody.”
Drivers aren’t the only ones concerned about the uneven road.
“One thing that worries me a lot is the drop-off,” Sen. Natasha Marcus, D-District 41, said.
Two inches is the limit for drop-offs and NCDOT officials said they are within those guidelines.
“But I did hear from two motorcycle drivers who lost their balance on that drop-off,” Marcus said.
Emergency crews got to the scene to haul away the camper from the roadway.
It's not clear whether anyone was hurt.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
