WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — A former sheriff's office recruit in Watauga County is accused of child sex crimes, our news partner at the Watauga Democrat reported.
Matthew Nieland is charged with statutory sexual offense with a child.
He had just started training with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office.
A child reported the claims to the Avery County Sheriff's Office.
Nieland was given a $500,000 bond.
He is expected to face a judge Monday.
