Warm coats can bring hope and warmth to families in need

CHARLOTTE — If you ever wondered how much a coat donation means to the person receiving it, wonder no more.

Back in February, we met George Hester and his sons when they were receiving warm coats from the Channel 9 Coats for Kids drive. Tovi Martin with Crisis Assistance Ministry found just the right ones for them.

This week, we caught up with family, who are still wearing their coats.

Hester says he doesn’t take any act of kindness for granted. Before serving in the Army for nine years, he was homeless.

He says the gift of warm coats for his son represents something bigger.

“Hope is the big thing and hope and warmth go hand in hand,” he said.

We’ve even heard other stories of kids sleeping in their coats when it’s cold in their homes.

So, if you have gently used coats you no longer need or want to pick up a new one at the store, there are children who need them.

The Channel 9 Coats for Kids collection runs through Dec. 31. For a list of drop-off locations, click here.
