Volunteers provide meals to first responders helping with recovery efforts in Avery County

AVERY COUNTY, N.C. — Volunteers and deputies with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office fed hundreds of first responders Wednesday morning.

The group provided an early Christmas meal to those who have been helping with the recovery efforts in Avery County.

Organizers said residents and businesses across the county donated money to provide 380 meals.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with volunteers as they cooked barbecue chicken and ribs.

“This is a Merry Christmas to the community of Avery County from ... from Cleveland County,” one organizer said. “That’s what counts; it comes from the heart of everybody.”

Organizers said they plan to provide meals throughout the afternoon.
