Voluntary evacuations lifted for flood-prone neighborhood along Catawba River

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management has lifted a voluntary evacuation that was put in place Friday for those who live along Riverside Drive in northwest Charlotte because of flooding in the area following Thursday’s torrential downpours.

Officials said the order, which was issued around 6:45 a.m. for Riverside Drive, Lake Drive, Beagle Club Road, and Hart Road, was lifted because the Catawba River’s water level is starting to recede. While the floodwaters are receding, officials said they still present a dangerous condition and residents in the area are urged to use extreme caution.

Channel 9 has reported several times in the past on the neighborhood being vulnerable to flooding.

The congregate shelter activated at Hopewell High School on Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville was closed at noon. It was opened to give residents a place to stay during the evacuation order.

Any residents who need help are encouraged to reach out to the American Red Cross at 800 RED-CROSS for assistance.

The Charlotte Fire Department and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management are in the neighborhood to communicate with residents.

Duke Energy is keeping a close eye on water levels as well. The power company is moving water through the river system and said everyone living along lakes and rivers needs to watch out for rising water.

According to Duke, Lookout Shoals Lake is spilling and will exceed 107 feet. Mountain Island Lake will exceed 102 feet and officials expect it to spill over.

Lake Wateree is also expected to spill sometime Friday.
