KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A video surfaced Thursday showing a foot chase in Kannapolis where an officer was injured.
Police said the man being chased is in jail after putting himself, officers and the public in danger.
The chase unfolded along Glen Afton Boulevard on Tuesday. It started over a pair of keys.
Police said the man could have been killed running across a busy road.
The video, shared on Facebook, gives viewers an idea of how dangerous the foot chase was.
It started as a domestic dispute in the parking lot of Zaxbys.
Kanapolis police said 22-year-old Javonte Oxner got into a fight with his girlfriend, and threw her keys.
When an officer showed up the chase began.
At one point during the chase officers said crossed four lanes of traffic, jumping a large median, as vehicles drove by.
"He could have run out in traffic, and been struck by a vehicle. So he posed a danger to himself," Spry said.
Channel 9 showed Captain Terry Spry the video. Spry said Oxner not only put himself and the public in danger,
"This put the officer in danger," Spry said.
Take a look at what happened as the officer falls hard onto the concrete while giving chase.
The suspect even seemed to double back to check on her.
"She's not injured severely, she did get an abrasion," Spry said.
"You can kind of pick from his dialogue he was mocking us," Spry said.
Officers eventually caught Oxner and he faces charges of resisting arrest. Assault on an officer, and communicating threats.
Spry doesn't know why he ran. There were no warrants and he didn't have a record.
He said Oxner probably wasn't even going to be arrested.
But, he said that all changed in an instant.
"We do deal with this type of stuff, We are going to continue to do our job and do it as safely as we can. Unfortunately, sometimes our hands are forced by suspects and people we deal with," Spry said.
Oxner remains behind bars on $12,000 bond.
