Video shows deputies serving warrants open fire on armed man in car

CONCORD, N.C. — Channel 9 obtained video showing the moments when Cabarrus County deputies shot and killed an armed man.

A neighbor shared the video of the incident that happened on Aug. 23 from their home on Odell School Road.

The video shows members of the Cabarrus County Special Response Team jump out of a white pickup truck and start shooting while another deputy was still pulling up in an SUV.

Team members were there to serve warrants and they are trained to handle high-risk situations.

Deputies said they were on their way to serve felony warrants, including having a stolen gun and auto theft, on Andrew “Drew” Marlow.

The sheriff’s office sent a statement after the shooting saying deputies, “cautiously approached” Drew Marlow.

Deputies said Marlow pointed a gun at deputies and that’s when they opened fire.

They tried to save Drew Marlow, but he died at the scene, the sheriff said.

“I’m just trying to think what would Jesus do in this situation because this has been horrific,” said Trent Marlow, father of Drew Marlow. “I want to get him laid to rest.”

Trent Marlow recalls some of his favorite memories next to a boat dock where they fished.

“He loved it,” Trent Marlow said. “This was kind of his home away from home. You couldn’t get out of the driveway without him chasing you and getting in the truck. "

They won many fishing tournaments on Lake Norman.

“You’re a kid and you beat grown adults you know that’s the best of the best,” Trent Marlow said. “You beat them, and they’ve been doing it for 20 years.”

But the father is now overcome with grief.

“I’m a Christian man and you got to forgive, and I got the call,” he said. “And I am trying to find out what happened, and they won’t tell me.”

The deadly confrontation happened at a home where Drew Marlow’s grandmother used to live.

“I understand if you point (a gun) at police you are going to get shot, but he didn’t have to get shot that many times,” Trent Marlow said. “It was extensive, and nobody deserves that. You don’t have to shoot that many times.”

Trent Marlow acknowledges his son had a long criminal history, which he said was due to a long fight with addiction and substance abuse.

Drew Marlow was not a violent person, the father said. And he doesn’t understand how or why his son’s life ended the way it did.

“God knows the truth,” he said. “I may not ever know, but he does.”

The deputies involved are on administrative leave per protocol while the State Bureau of Investigation investigates.
