CHARLOTTE — The number of victims of violent crime in the Queen City rose 3% in 2024 compared to last year, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced on Tuesday in its end-of-year public safety report.
However, the number of incidents was down 1%, CMPD said.
The main reason behind the increase in victims is because there was a 4% increase in “aggravated assault by pointing a firearm,” police said.
CMPD said this data is consistent with the National Incident-Based Reporting System, which is focused on victimization, not incidents.
The police department provided an example of what that means: “If someone fires a gun at a home and eight people are inside of that home, all eight are considered victims. In this example, there was one shooting incident, but eight victims and that is reflected in CMPD’s reporting system.”
Overall crime victimization was up by 3% but overall incidents were down 1%.
CMPD focused on areas, such as “juvenile crime, automobile thefts, street takeovers and curtailing violent crime in areas of high victimization,” to get those numbers down.
The police department investigated 110 homicides last year. There were 96 the year before.
