Veteran Channel 9 Reporter Jim Bradley retiring from WSOC-TV

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jim Bradley, veteran television reporter for Channel 9 Eyewitness News, announced his plans to retire after 33 years with the station. Jim is the longest serving reporter in the Charlotte area.

“It’s been a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the community as well as an incredible journey to witness firsthand the transformation of this great city,” said Jim Bradley.

“Viewers and those of us who have had the pleasure of working with Jim have all benefited from his talents and his dedication to quality journalism,” said Joe Pomilla, WSOC Television, Inc. Vice President and General Manager. “We want to thank him for his many years of hard work and dedication to the Eyewitness News family and the Charlotte community.”

In January Jim will retire from Channel 9 as a Senior Reporter for the 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. weekday newscasts. He joined the Eyewitness News team in 1983. Before coming to WSOC-TV, Jim also worked in Memphis and Chattanooga, Tennessee as well as Utica, New York.

Jim has delivered important, pivotal stories to the viewers of the Carolinas during his tenure. He covered multiple political conventions, the fallout of Jim Bakker and the PTL scandal, the crash of USAir Flight 1016, Hurricane Hugo and the investigation of former Mayor Patrick Cannon. Jim won awards for his coverage of the Rae Carruth trial, a special report on hate crimes and is a former North Carolina Journalist of the Year (1986).

Jim’s two year investigation into the unusually high number of rare eye cancer cases in Huntersville prompted new testing to answer questions about a possible common cause. His investigation into homeowner associations resulted in legislation requiring new restrictions.

“I am honored to have worked with Jim and to call him my friend,” said Julie Szulczewski, WSOC-TV News Director. “His same care and compassion as a person, has been there all these years on the air, providing viewers with his own unique perspective. While we’re sad to see him retire, we’re happy for the next chapter in his life and the additional time he’ll have to spend with his family.”

Jim has been married for 34 years to wife Ruby and has three daughters. His last day will be January, 3rd 2017.
