LINCOLNTON, N.C. — An employee at a vape shop in Lincolnton shot at suspects trying to rob the store Thursday afternoon, the Lincoln County sheriff said.

Depute said they responded to Dave’s, a smoke shop, just before 1:30 p.m. At the scene, they found a man lying on the ground of the store with injuries.

An investigation determined that two suspects were attempting to rob the store while a third suspect waited in a vehicle nearby.

At least one of the suspects then physically assaulted an employee in the store before stealing items from the store, as well as an undisclosed amount of cash.

Deputies said as the suspects fled the scene, gunfire was exchanged, and one of the suspects was shot.

Shortly after, the suspects showed up at an area hospital, where two of them were taken into custody. The third suspect was eventually located behind a business on Stanford Drive.

One suspect was untimely treated for a gunshot wound, and another was treated for head injuries, according to deputies.

Scene outside Atrium Health Urgent Care off Highway 150 in Lincolnton on Feb. 6, 2025.

Lincolnton High School was under a lockdown because it is near the vape shop. The lockdown was later lifted.

Two students were in the parking lot of the school when they said they heard three shots ring out across the street.

“Everybody was kind of looking and yelling, ‘There’s a drive-by. There’s a drive-by,’” said student Layla Cain.

“The cops started coming to the car and saying, ‘Get out of the car. You need to go back to the school and get inside the school,’” said student Alyssa Jenkins.

Student Zar Coleman told Channel 9 that everyone ran and hid.

“Scary,” said student Keziah Patterson. “(It) makes me not want to come back tomorrow.”

Deputies said Kwan Monteith, Jr. and Jacorrion Montgomery have been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with this case.

However, additional charges are pending.
