CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers posted a dismal 5-12 record last season and spent the first half of 2022 alienating business partners and political leaders as they torpedoed a mixed-use team headquarters project in Rock Hill. Along the way, several key executives abruptly departed, further eroding confidence in the franchise’s current direction.

But nobody really loses in the NFL: According to Sportico, David Tepper’s franchise is now worth $3.36 billion, up 13% from 2021 and roughly one-third more than the record $2.275 billion he paid for the team in 2018. Tepper’s record purchase price will be surpassed later this month if, as expected, the league approves Walmart Inc. heir Rob Walton’s $4.65 billion offer for the Denver Broncos.
