CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer driving an unmarked patrol vehicle collided with someone Wednesday evening on East Independence Boulevard, police said.

The collision happened around 6 p.m. near Idlewild Road.

The police vehicle heading east was in the middle lane while in traffic when Amber Sanyasi was crossing the busy road separated by a cement barrier.

Sanyasi was not in a crosswalk when she was hit. She was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The officer wasn’t speeding and wasn’t impaired, CMPD said.

Police are waiting on test results to see if Sanyasi was impaired.

The officer was not hurt.

Part of Independence Boulevard was blocked and roped off with crime-scene tape while police investigated.

The investigation is ongoing.
