UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The Union County Sheriff's Office unveiled its state-of-the-art 100-yard firing range Wednesday morning. Sheriff Eddie Cathey fired a few shots moments after the ribbon-cutting.
Groundbreaking for the range occurred in 2016 but discussions and planning for the facility began as early as 2005.
The range is located at 1424 Mills Harris Road near Wingate.
Future plans include an outdoor learning center and a shoot house, along with setting up temporary classrooms using several mobile homes acquired through Union County Public Schools.
Long-range plans include a permanent training classroom and a driving pad that will accommodate other county personnel, including emergency medical services, fire departments, transportation, school bus drivers and law enforcement officers.
The range is not open to the public, but it will operate as a regional law enforcement training facility for police departments in Union County, as well as other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
